Infertility Facts

Infertility affects 6.1 million Americans, about 15 percent of the reproductive age population. When a couple is infertile the problem is attributed to
  • 40 percent female infertility
  • 40 percent male infertility
  • 20 percent male and female.
Male Factor Infertility
Poor sperm quality is responsible for about 40 percent of all diagnosed cases of male infertility.

The five criteria of healthy sperm:
  • Count: total number of sperm found in semen. "Normal" count is at least 40 million per ejaculate.
  • Concentration: Total number of sperm cells per milliliter of semen. A concentration of at least 20 million sperm per milliliter per ejaculate is considered "normal".
  • Morphology: The size and shape of the sperm. Normal sperm have an oval head and a long tail. In semen analysis, 15 percent or more of the sample should be normal sperm.
  • Motility: The ability of the sperm to move or swim through cervical mucus to the fallopian tubes. Normal sperm motility is 50 percent.
  • Velocity: Refers to the number of sperm that are the fastest swimmers and most likely to fertilize the egg. Also referred to as "rapid linear progression".

Other Factors Contributing to Male Infertility:

  • Anti-Sperm Antibodies: Proteins in the body that "attack" sperm cells and disable them, preventing them from fertilizing the egg.
  • Hypogonadism: A condition that results in decreased levels of testosterone. This deficiency negatively impacts sperm production and sperm count.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Alcohol consumption, drug use (recreational and prescription), nutrition, sexually transmitted diseases, herbs & supplements, smoking, heat, clothing (boxers vs. briefs), timing of intercourse, occupational hazards, stress.
  • Varicoceles: Varicose (enlarge and twisted) veins located in the testicles. Varicoceles can impact sperm production and therefore reduce sperm counts.

Yeast Infections

An organism called Candida Albicans causes Yeast Infections, which are tiny organisms that inhabit the inside of the vagina. Should the biological balance of the vagina get disturbed, an overabundance of yeast can grow, causing a vaginal infection.

The vaginal environment can be disturbed by a variety of reasons including some antibiotics, oral contraceptives, menstruation, pregnancy and moisture caused by wet or tight clothing.

The symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include the following:

  • Itching and burning in, around and on the outside "lips" of the vagina.
  • Thick, cottage cheese-like discharge.
  • Pain during sexual intercourse.

Although you should see your doctor the first time you have symptoms of a yeast infection, there are a variety of Over-the-Counter medications to choose from. Medicine may be in the form of a cream, such as Vagi-Gard® Sensitive or Maximum Strength Cream to relieve the outer burning sensation; as well as an internal remedy such as Yeast Gard™ Suppositories or Femizol-M™.

Regardless of the treatment you choose, there are steps you can take to avoid another yeast infection:

  • Wear loose cotton panties.
  • Eat Yogurt.
  • Refrain from sweets, alcohol and caffeine.
  • Before getting dressed, dry the vaginal area after bathing or swimming.

Homeopathic Medicine

Homeopathy is an alternative system of medicine that was founded in the early 19th century by a German physician, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. This pharmaceutical science is based upon the principle that "Like Cures Like".

Homeopathic medicine utilizes micro-doses of substances from the plant, mineral or animal kingdom in order to stimulate the healing powers of the body. They are prepared by a process of step by step repeated dilution and shaking, which makes them capable of stimulating the body's own defense system.

A common homeopathic medicine given to women is Pulsatilla (windflower). It is a particularly common treatment for women with vaginal itching and burning. Pulsatilla is not considered an anti-itch medication but rather an effective and safe medicine for strengthening a woman's natural defenses, thereby creating an environment that is not conducive to vaginal itching and burning.

Pulsatilla may be the most frequently prescribed medicine, and as such, it is an invaluable treatment to make available to women who are seeking natural alternatives. The combination of Pulsatilla, Candida Albicans and Candida Parapsilosis in Yeast Gard™ Suppositories is a valuable treatment for the common vaginal burning and itching experienced by women.

It is the gentle and safe medicines of homeopathy that are often preferred by women and it is this alternative that is becoming a regular part of many women's lives.
